A Display Energy Certificate (DEC) is a legal requirement for many public buildings in the UK, showing the actual energy performance of a building based on real usage. What is a Display Energy Certificate?

A DEC measures how efficiently a building is performing in operation, rating it from A (most efficient) to G (least efficient) based on actual energy consumption.

DECs are required for buildings that:

  • Are occupied by public authorities

  • Are frequently visited by the public

  • Have a total floor area over 250m²

The certificate must be clearly displayed within the building.

Alongside the DEC, you must also have a valid Advisory Report, which provides recommendations for improving energy performance. Validity periods:

  • Buildings over 1,000m²: DEC valid for 1 year

  • Smaller qualifying buildings: DEC valid for up to 10 years
